BIO

No Water No Moon is the music of singer-songwriter Tim Martin. Martin released his debut album “Crude Culture” in 2021. No Water No Moon’s sound fuses indie, vintage rock n’ roll, and minimalist electronica, while Martin’s songwriting echoes influences like Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon, and Thom Yorke. Martin isolated and recorded “Crude Culture” during the pandemic of 2020, reflecting upon the year’s themes of grief and reckoning.

Martin’s musical career spans 15 years of songwriting and performance. He has toured across the U.S. and performed internationally on four different continents including Canada, the U.K., Scotland, Argentina, Nepal, and India. Prior to this album, he was the vocalist for the ensemble Dance Mandal and a solo acoustic artist. A multi-instrumentalist, he sings as well as plays keys, guitar, bass, drums, and vibraphone. Martin also works as a psychotherapist and lives with his two biggest fans, his wife and 2-year-old daughter, in Santa Fe, NM.

Crude Culture

“Facing life head-on is the central theme of the album. The songs are lyrically melancholy, but the melodic musical arrangements create a balance that soothes.” - Albuquerque Journal

“4.0 out of 5… Martin’s natural, earthy voice begins alternating with vocoder harmonies, making for a surprisingly lush construction.” - Divide and Conquer

“Crude Culture” features a spectrum, from minimal Prophet compositions like “Sky Burial” to the fully formed rock operatics of its title track. In between, No Water No Moon has molded a unique blend of multi-part harmonies, vocoder gymnastics, raga gamak (musical ornamentation), synthesizers and strings, distorted organs and drum machines into something both familiar and strange to the American song tradition. Lyrically, Martin aligns with the likes of Cohen, Dylan, and Lennon, attempting to carry on traditions of rock n’ roll while grappling with the darker specters of Western culture. Opening with the line, “I was born into plastic gloves, and that is how I’ll die,” Martin and his music seek to own what America has become while holding on to the angels of its musical traditions.

EXTENDED BIO

A Kansas City native, Martin grew up singing and playing drums/piano for musical theater ensembles as well as ska, jazz, and rock bands, including the indie group Sappho Comet. He is perhaps best known for writing, directing, and composing the musical score for the independent play He’s Just Tired

From 2006-2011, Martin toured as a solo artist, playing acoustic shows in cafes and bars throughout the U.S. and releasing a live album under the moniker Hot Tea. In 2011, Martin would fuse his spiritual and musical interests as the singer for the Nepalese dance ensemble, Dance Mandal. Martin lived and worked closely with Prajwal Ratna Vajracharya, the most prominent charya nritya dancer from Kathmandu. With Vajracharya and his troupe, Martin recorded, memorized, and performed dozens of Sanskrit charya giti, a rare musical genre akin to classical Indian raga. Martin toured with the troupe internationally while studying Indian raga with teachers in the States and South Asia.

Martin’s return to rock music came during the covid pandemic of 2020. Isolated at home with his family, he furnished a minimalist recording studio in his garage. He spent the year meeting with psychotherapy clients via telehealth during the day and recording at night. The album “Crude Culture” spans 15 years of song-writing and singles as recent as 2020’s “You Can’t Explain” and “The Price” which were distillations of the trauma, grief, and injustice he witnessed throughout the year.
